AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...The next cold front is expected to bring a round of
rain and wind tonight with a brief break on Friday. Friday night
and Saturday morning another front is expected to bring rain and
wind as far south as northern Mendocino county. The final front
in the series is expected to bring widespread rain Saturday night
and Sunday with drier weather finally on Monday.

.DISCUSSION...Occasional periods of light rain will continue this
afternoon north, with dry weather farther south. Heavier rain is
expected this evening and overnight. 1 to 3 inches of rain is
expected. Locally lower amounts are possible in southern Lake
county and around Humboldt Bay. This may bring some minor
flooding of low lying areas and some rises on the already elevated
rivers. For now it looks like on the russian river at Hopland will
reach flood stage with the Mad and Eel rivers expected to reach
monitor stage on Friday. Another round of strong winds is
expected as well. The 925 MB winds just off the coast reach close
to 70 KT. Farther south along the Mendocino coast the 925 MB winds
reach 40 to 45 kt. This may allow some gusts of 40 mph to mix
down. The 850 MB winds show nearly 50 kt westerly winds at 850
over Lake county towards morning. This could bring some gusts of
40 to 45 mph to the ridges of Lake county.

Friday once the front moves it is expected to be a mainly dry day
with just some lingering light showers. West to northwest winds
early in the morning are expected to switch back to southerly by
Friday afternoon.

Friday night and Saturday the next system is expected to bring
rain to the area. The models have shift this slightly farther
north than previously expected. Southern Mendocino and Lake
counties are not expected to see much additional rain Friday night
and Saturday. Sunday the final front of the series is expected to
move through bringing an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain. Del
Norte county may not see much of a break between these last
systems and this will increase the potential for flooding.

Monday through the middle of the week drier weather is expected.
Some light rain is possible by Wednesday in the north, but any
amounts are expected to be minimal. The valleys will likely see
fog and it may be dense at times. This will likely keep high
temperatures cool in the inland valleys as the fog will be slow to
clear out. MKK

.AVIATION...Post frontal On/off weather activity continued to
minimally impact areas airports and flight operations today.
Coastal Taf sites were regularly MVFR...especially due to
visibilities. Inland valleys reported MVFR Cigs through late
morning. Coastal winds diminished at the coast, but revved back up
at CEC around noonday. Another disturbance will bring more
adverse weather to the region overnight and Friday morning.
Guidances indicate the most impactful conditions in the latter
evening/early morning. Mean peak gusts at the coast are expected
between 05-09z. Winds aloft will increase this afternoon.
Therefore, LLWS will become significant at the coastal air
terminals by this evening. /TA

.MARINE...The weather will continue to be very unsettled through
the weekend as multiple swell trains and storm systems move
through the area. Currently an 18 to 21 ft westerly swell at 15
seconds is moving through the waters resulting in hazardous seas
for all waters. This swell is also resulting in large breaking
surf at the coast and dangerous shoaling conditions. While this
swell gradually decays, southerly winds will ramp up in advance of
an approaching front this evening with gale conditions expected
to develop. Thus, hazardous seas warnings currently in effect for
the swell will be quickly followed by gale warnings this evening
into the overnight. Westerly winds will develop a little after
midnight behind the passing front with gusts possibly to gale
force for a couple of hours.

Winds will decrease markedly Friday morning followed by a return to
small craft southerlies Friday afternoon and evening. However,
another large swell is expected to move through the waters with seas
peaking between 18 and 20 feet at 16 seconds, which once again may
require a hazardous seas warning into Friday night...followed by yet
another swell on Saturday along with an increase in southerly winds
Saturday night into Sunday, possibly to gale force. Essentially the
conditions are not going to be favorable now through the weekend.

With all that said, there is hope! Conditions are looking much more
tranquil beginning Monday into much of next week. /RPA

.HYDROLOGY...A cold front is expected to bring another round of
rain to the are this evening and overnight. Most areas will not
see too much flooding with this, however the Russian River at
Hopland is expected to reach minor flood stage early Friday
morning. Friday night the next system is expected to bring rain to
the area, but this will mainly stay north of Willits. This will
push back north during the day on Saturday and will give most
areas a break in the rain. However Del Norte county may not see
these breaks and this could bring some flooding. The next system
is expected to spread rain across the area Saturday night and
Sunday. This may bring 1 to 3 inches in most areas and could cause
some minor flooding across the area. The biggest threat will be
in Del Norte county where is little to no break in the rain. Then
next week the rivers are expected to gradually come down. MKK

.BEACH HAZARDS...A large westerly swell is currently impacting
the coastline resulting in breaking waves between 20 and 23 feet.
A high surf advisory has been issued to highlight the threat of
these breaking waves through early this evening. Surf will
decrease in size overnight. However, the slight decrease in wave
height will be short lived with two additional swells expected to
move through the waters Friday and Saturday with the potential for
additional high surf conditions.

For beachgoers this means dangerous conditions into the weekend with
large breaking waves washing onto rocks and jetties. It is highly
recommended that everyone stay far back from the surf and off of any
rock faces along the coast. Breaking waves can wash much farther up
a rock face than you would expect. /RPA
